Member's Guide

This guide is an introduction for new members. Wiltwyck Quilters Guild is a group of friendly faces and hands who get together once a month, from September to May, to learn about, promote, and share in the art of making quilts. We welcome anyone who is interested in quilting to join us. We are a dynamic group and depend upon the participation of all our members. So come to meetings and learn all you can, and be sure to share your own expertise with the rest of us.

By-Laws - are available upon request from the memebership chairperson. This describes the officers and the committees of the guild. All officers and committee heads are encouraged to attend board meetings. Serving in a position is a great way to meet more members and have a say in the way your guild is run, so volunteer. Elections are held at the May meeting.

Monthly Meetings - are held the third Saturday of the month unless holiday conflicts require a posting of a different date. The meetings begin with coffee and chatting at 9:30, then start promptly at 10AM. The meetings usually last until 3:00. Business meetings are held in September, November, January, March, and May. Meetings are held at the Town of Ulster Town Hall, Lake Katrine off Rt 209.

Membership and Dues - Membership is open to anyone who has a basic knowlege in the skills and techniques of quiltmaking. Payment of the annual dues ($20) entitles a member voting privileges, the right to hod an office, a membership card (good for discounts in some local fabric shops), newsletter subscription, lectures, and workshop registration (there may be a fee for the workshop itself) and other special privileges which may arise. Dues are used for newsletter costs, having guest speakers and teachers (speakers and teachers who are guild members are not paid), and other operating costs of the guild activities. Non-members are charged an extra fee for attending lectures and/or workshops. Quilters over the age of 75 are eligible for free membership.

Guild Motto - "Quilting is caring and sharing". The word Wiltwyck stand for 'wild place', and this quild is certainly wild about quilting.

Guild Pin - the guild pin displaying our logo, Hands All Around, is available for $2.50 from our membership chairperson ($5.00 for nonmembers).

Name Tags - must be worn to each meeting so that we can know who you are and be able to put a name to a face! Design a name tag, and be sure to wear it to the meetings and you will get a free raffle ticket.

Membership Book - All members and guest (yes, you may bring a guest at no charge to a meeting) are requested to sign in at the membership table upon arrival. Guests may visit twice before being required to join.

Community Service - during the year we make quilts for donation to local groups. Each member is requested to make at least one donation. Supplies are available for these quilts which are then given to those in need as determined by the chair of this committee. The battered women's shelter is our primary recipient. In addition, lap quilts and armchair covers are made for local nursing homes.

Library - available to all members. A $10 check is held (not cashed) by the librarian for the year which acts as a security deposit to ensure the return of the items. Books are due at the next meeting. We also get donated books from That Patchwork Place in return for a copy of our membership list.

Hospitality - Bring your own mug of beverage and members bring goodies to share before each meeting.

Raffle - there is a raffle table of quilt related itemsat each meeting. Tickets are five for $1. Buy as many as you wish - and good luck.

Raffle Block - this is a learning tool. Each month instruction for a block is given. You may purchase the fabric kit and instructions. A winner is chosen from those who return their blocks. Please try to get the block back the next month since often the winner could use as many blocks as possible if there is a specific fabric provided. Try to do all the blocks, since they build on the lessons of the prior blocks.

Fat Quarter Lottery - the newsletter will anounce the type of fabric for the fat quarter (18"x22") lottery. Bring in an entry for a chance to win them all - no sign up.

Show and Tell - occurs at all meetings except when we have a guest lecturer. This allows you to ask for help on a problem or show off your latest accomplishment. It's a great instigator of new ideas.

Charm Squares - A sign up sheet plus the type of fabric to select is available. The newsletter will publish how many members signed up for the charm squares. This tells you how many 6 inch square blocks you need to bring to the next meeting. You then take home a set of blocks, one from each perso who signed up. Please make sure that before cutting your squares, you have removed the selvege edge. Thefabric should be pre-washed and irined 100% cotton unless specifically unstructed to be different. Take care in cutting the squares, making sure they are 6" by 6". Bring your blocks in a plasstic bag that has your name clearlymarked on it. Every effort should be made to get your squares to the meeting for distibution.

Quilt Show - Our guild prepares for a quilt show every other year. The dates are usually the first or second weekend of October in even numbered years. Each member is enlisted to help make the show a success. Volunteer for the committee that matches your interests. A raffle quilt is made for each show as a fund raiser, so please help seel the tickets.

Chapters - these are small group meetings of guild members that meet on a regular basis. The guild encourages chapters to kep the stimulation flowing. Time at the September kickoff meeting is allocated to form chapters, but may be formed at any time during the year.

Round Robin - led by one of the members, this is a progressive quilt top development where your initial section then gets passed around the group, each person adding to the next section, You will work on each of the other team members project during the year. The rules for the round robin are agreed to by your group, which is usually five of six members.

Sampler Quilt - led by one of the members, you make fabric packets for others to cut and sew into blocks of their choosing, In addition, you make a block for each participant out of their fabric. If there are 10 in the group, each person makes 10 blocks of a pattern of their choosing, using the supplied fabric. By May, you should also get returned 10 different blocks made from fabric you supplied for a good start on a sampler quilt.

Block Exchange - these consist of several small groups who want to exchange blocks evey month. Four or five members will form a group for the block exchange, deciding on the size and theme of the block. Then, each month you make the identical block out of the same fabric for each of the members. For example, if there are members in the group, and they have decided to make 6 inch block using homespun fabric, then the first month you would make 4 identical blocks but using a different pattern, then bring them in to distribute. By May, you should end up with 32 blocks of homespun fabric that are 6" square.

Quilt basting - each month that we do not have a paid guest lecturer, you can sign up to have a quilt basted. Contact the program chairperson in advance to reserve a quilt frame.

Summary - As you can see the guild activities are centered around sharing expertise and forming a supportive atmosphere to further the art of quilting. If you have ant suggestions on how to better your guild, contact any officer.
