Ricky Tims' Super Quilt Seminar! Trip report by Shirley Swenson In one word, the Ricky Tims' Super Quilt Seminar in Glens Falls, NY, on May 1-3, 2008, was SUPER! This was the largest seminar to date with over 670 in attendance. Twenty-two of us attended as part of the Wiltwyck group: Jackie Brooks, Peggy Cahill, Shirley Darrow, Gloria Frenza, Sarah Kessenich, Vicki Lienau, Betsy McElrath, Mary McLaughlin, Arlene Merker, Angee Opdyke, Regina Packard, Barbara Repko, Marquita Rich, Doreen Sangaline, Sue Stepp, Norma Strothenke, Shirley Swenson, Judy Turco, Diane Weaver (non-member), Leona Willis, Dolly Wodin, and Dagmar Yaddow.
There were ten 1-1/2 hour sessions taught by Ricky, Alex Anderson, and Libby Lehmann. Personally, I learned lots from each and every session, and I'm very eager to try out some of the techniques. In addition, there was a quilt exhibit, mostly with quilts they had made, and a store to buy their books, products they like and sell, Superior threads, Bernina machines, Ricky's hand-dyed fabrics, and much more. Ricky, Alex, and Libby were all very generous with their time and signed autographs and talked to attendees before the sessions and during all the breaks. We even had a Wiltwyck group photo taken with Ricky and Alex.
Oh, and how can I forget the piano concert by Ricky on Friday evening. He's a superb pianist, and a warm and giving person.
All promotional sponsors, such as Wiltwyck, received the following: 2 of Ricky's quilt patterns, his two workshop DVDs, and 3 of his music CDs. You can contact me to borrow these, and eventually I'll add them to the library. They also gave away many "door prizes" during the seminar to individuals, and paid special tribute to the oldest attendee. For this seminar, a 101-year-old woman attended, and she had just bought a new Bernina sewing machine! Imagine! I guess that you are never too old to quilt.
We also got to see a bit of Glens Falls, which is a very nice upstate town. The merchants were very happy to have us quilters in town
—
we helped support their local economy. We felt very welcome because many businesses had quilts displayed in their windows.
Sue Stepp will tell you a little more about the individual sessions, and looking ahead to November 2008, we'll present about six demonstrations of techniques from the seminar. Don't miss it!
